Memoir

The Glass Castle

The Glass Castle depicts the childhood of Jeanette Walls, growing up in a family unwilling to conform to societal norms. They moved as nomads among the Southwest until the money ran out and their ideals faded, and the family of six ended up back in father Rex’s West Virginia hometown, a place he tried hard to escape. Drowning in their father’s alcohol abuse and their mother’s refusal to grow up and be their provider, Jeanette and her siblings had to take care of each other with the most limited of resources. Despite all that she overcame, the story Jeanette tells is one of unconditional love.

Classics Pride & Prejudice Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice focuses on the importance of marrying for love, not money or social status. It follows the Bennet family as the mother attempts to marry off her 5 daughters to gain wealth once their father passes and their estate passes to the next male heir. A modern re-telling by Curtis Sittenfeld titled Eligible helps to make the story more relatable, with a Bachelor contestant as a male lead and Instagram models as the youngest sisters. Austen’s complex characters and beautiful storytelling lead to a timeless and captivating novel. Sittenfeld re-worked it for our times, making it almost more entertaining the second time around.
