How to Boost Your Immune System

Dealing with all the unknowns can be difficult during the Coronavirus pandemic. One area where we can gain control is by taking action to boost our immune system. It is proven that certain foods and lifestyle choices can help to increase your overall health.  Below is a list of ideas to help give our immune system the power it needs to help ward off those germs.

1. Balanced Diet: Eating a diet of mostly fruits, vegetables and whole foods does a body good! Other little ways to boost immunity in your diet include eating raw garlic cloves (you can roast them first as well), taking a probiotic supplement, increasing your vitamin C intake through produce (specifically oranges, kiwi, broccoli, & cantaloupe) as well as antioxidants.

2. Getting Enough Sleep: Living with stress causes the body to produce cortisol, which over time makes it harder to fight off infection. Keep stress at bay by making a few lifestyle changes, starting with getting better sleep. Prioritize getting 7-8 hours each night by setting a nighttime routine, turning off screens before bed, or taking a Melatonin supplement. Before going to bed for the night, try sitting quietly and concentrating on your breathing.  You can even try 5 minutes of a guided meditation.   This can lower your heartrate and blood pressure, as well as reduce anxiety, which can lead to better nighttime sleep.

3. Being Active: Take 10-30 minutes each day to move your body, even if it is just a walk outside. Exercise increases your body’s resilience to infections.

4. Practice Good Hygiene: Of course, we have all heard about washing hands by now, but it is the biggest key for destroying those lingering germs that may be on your hands.  Remember to keep your hands away from your face, practice social distancing and wear a mask if you need to go out in public.

5. Keep Your Mind Active: It is important to make sure you are taking care of yourself mentally. Keep your mind active by reading a book, picking up a new hobby or trying out a strategy game, whether a crossword puzzle or something online.

6. Spend Time Outdoors: Spending time outdoors does wonders for your mental state, especially when we have been sheltering in place for months.  Fresh air can really rejuvenate your body, both physically and mentally.  Take a walk, enjoy a bike ride, go for a hike, or discover a local park nearby.

7. Staying in Touch: There are so many ways to stay connected – through social media, instant messaging apps (WhatsApp or GroupMe) and video chat services like Zoom, House Party and Google Hangouts. Staying in touch with your loved ones during a difficult time keeps your spirits up and helps to keep perspective.

8. Positive Attitude: Remember – your attitude dictates how you feel in any given situation. Start your day with a positive mantra and you can help to keep the good vibes going throughout the day!
